The programme covers technical, physical and mental skills and the underpinning coaching principles drawn from best practice within the racing industry.
The Level 1 Racing Coach Programme is designed for those with racing knowledge and experience who wish to assist young and inexperienced racing grooms to enhance their existing racing skills and to develop new capabilities.
A Level 1 Racing Coach does not need to have previous coaching experience or to hold any other instructional awards.
Training and assessment are delivered during a 4-day residential course held at the National Horseracing College, Doncaster and the British Racing School, Newmarket.
The programme covers different areas of coaching and how to apply coaching skills in a practical setting. Candidates must be working in a senior role and have solid experience in a hands-on capacity. The aim of the course is to provide candidates with techniques to safely coach racing skills to young and inexperienced members of the racing staff team. Courses comply with BHA and 1st4Sport guidelines.
Those wishing to become a Level 1 Racing Coach must satisfy the following criteria:
The cost of the Level 1 Racing Coaching Course is £1,500. During 2025 the programme is subsidised by the racing industry, leaving a £50.00 deposit payable. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be refunded the £50.00 deposit. Accommodation is funded.
In addition to achieving a recognised coaching qualification, candidates will also gain a safeguarding and first aid certificate. Please note those requiring first aid training will be required to stay for an additional course day making this a 5 day course, those who already hold this qualification will be exempt.
Full course attendance (i.e. all webinars, workshops and assessment) is required by candidates. By accepting a place on the programme, following successful application, candidates acknowledge and agree to this commitment.
The Level 1 Racing Coach qualification is just the start of the journey. The Level 2 and Level 3 Racing Coach Courses are designed for those who wish to take their coaching to the next levels. To be considered for these courses, candidates need to be actively coaching and engaging with the RSDP Continuing Professional Development programme and be keen to work with and develop staff outside their current workplace team.
Applicants are required to complete an application form enabling the RSDP team to understand the candidate’s coaching and racing background.
